Vulnerable Mothers Sewing Project

As in many nations the rural population in Kenya is somewhat conservative and old fashioned. Children born out of wedlock are scorned and their mothers (not the fathers) are rejected by their parents and evicted from the family home. This leads, obviously, to hardship and extreme poverty which in turn means the rejected girls turn to prostitution as a form of survival and inevitably to further children. A downward spiral that is hard to reverse.

Classic Geo Foundation has been facilitating the establishment of the Sewing Centre that provide the girls with alternative paths in life.

Community is important no matter where you live. Training and skills development are an important component of working with the community. When people have skills, they are more likely to create work, which provides an income, and enables households to deal with poverty.

These ladies are part of the project, where they are given the opportunity to train to become seamstresses and regain self-esteem with a profession and the chance to earn their own livings. Their small income gives them hope for a brighter future.

We try our best to raise funds for the sewing materials, security, wages for the instructor, electricity and rent for the premises.

We have started gifting these ladies the sewing machines after they have completed their training. This enables them to run small enterprises from the comfort of their home. This income generated from their hard work is able to support a household of 6-8 people.
